The University of Benin popularly known as UNIBEN is a Federal government owned university and was founded in the year 1970. It is precisely located at Ovia North-East local government area of Edo state.

It has two major Campuses, the Ugbowo campus which is the main campus and houses most of the school’s faculty and departments and the smaller Ekehuan Campus located at Ekehuan community which houses some courses in the faculty of Arts. As the biggest and largest university in Edo state, University of Benin has a student population of over 77,000 students enrolled in various departments.

Founded in the year 1999, Igbinedion University is a landmark institution in Nigeria as it is the first private University recognized in Nigeria and also the first University to produce a medical doctor in Sub-Sahara region. It was founded by Sir Gabriel Osawuru Igbinedion a Benin Chief who is also millionaire and a Philanthropist.
